Opening a yogurt box can be a frustrating experience, especially for children and the elderly. The packaging often sticks to the box, making it difficult to tear off. However, designer Lu Yi has come up with a solution that leverages the principles of physics to create an easily opened yogurt box.
The key feature of this design is a corner that bends down on the top surface of the box. This simple addition creates a small seam between the yogurt box and the packaging, without affecting the capacity of the box. The seam makes it quicker to find the opening, and the corner provides a larger leveraging point compared to ordinary yogurt boxes. By pressing on this corner, people can easily and completely tear off the packaging.
The yogurt box is made of PE material, while the packaging is made of aluminum foil. The dimensions of the box are 50mm in width, 80mm in depth, and 60mm in height, with a capacity of 240ml. The design team, consisting of Lu Yi, Chen Meng, Sun Yuchen, Liu Yuhang, Ren Tianjiao, and Ma Yijun, worked on this project in Shenyang from February to March 2017.
The design of the easy opening yogurt box overcame challenges in determining the angle and position of the bending corner. The result is a design that is not only convenient but also aesthetically pleasing. With a simple interaction of pressing the bending corner with one hand and tearing off the packaging with the other, opening yogurt boxes has never been easier.
This innovative design has received recognition for its ingenuity and resourcefulness. In 2017, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
